Prohibition Sign | Prohibited for Jews | Grijpskerke

White wooden sign with black statement “Voor Joden verboden” (“Prohibited for Jews”) and the note “The Attorney General acting as regional chief of police, Genechten” Left of this note there is a military trademark.

This prohibition sign was attached to a shed of the temporary butcher “Kleinepier” from Grijpskerke. By means of this sign on the housefront the Germans thought this butcher was pro-Germans, that’s why he wasn’t checked very often. In fact he supported the community by carrying out slaughterings illegally.

After mr. Kleinepier died his house was sold, and when the present inhabitants refurbished this shed they found this sign hidden behind a double wall. The current inhabitants contacted mr Kleinepier’s nephew Jan from Meliskerke, who donated this wooden sign to us.
